Population growth will fit within current city boundaries.

Bold growth requires a bold plan. Ours started when we met with Edmontonians from all corners of the city.

They shared their vision. Then we got to work.

How will we create a healthy, urban and climate resilient city of two million people?

How will we create a healthy, urban and climate resilient city of two million people?

The result is The City Plan—a conscious direction that honours what we love, where we’ve been, and leaves our city better for future generations.

The choices we make today will shape the future.

A rebuildable city

We will adapt.

Instead of letting unexpected challenges define us, our ability to adapt will set us apart.

We’ll welcome over half a million new Edmontonians in areas of the city ready for redevelopment and infill.

Inclusive and compassionate

We will welcome you home.

Having a place to live and the ability to afford it helps people contribute to the prosperity and safety of their communities.

In 2065, nobody will be in core housing need. There will be no chronic or episodic homelessness.

If Edmonton is home, you have a home.

We will keep a low cost of living. Only 35% of what you spend will be needed for housing and transportation.

Catalyze and converge

We will work and thrive.

Innovation creates jobs. With two million people, jobs will be more dispersed and decentralized helping to pave the way for sustainable prosperity.

Edmonton will become a hub for jobs with 70% of the region’s employment within the city.

As the city innovates, innovative jobs will arrive. And in big numbers.

Our reputation as a beacon for new businesses will continue to grow, helping to create over half a million jobs in our nodes and corridors.

A community of communities

We will connect more easily.

Our connections to each other are a source of good health and happiness. At two million people we will connect faster and more easily than before.

Less time traveling. More time for everything else.

In 2020, less than a quarter of daily trips occur by transit and active transportation. We’ll expand the way Edmontonians move so that half of daily trips are by transit, walking and cycling.

Work and life should be nearby. Your daily tasks will all be within 15 minutes of travel time.

Greener as we grow

We will be climate resilient.

In a liveable city, development and sustainability do not compete. They thrive in concert. We will use growth to spark sustainable design and conscious decision making.

If we continue on our current path, Edmonton will eventually emit 600 megatonnes of greenhouse gasses. As a city of climate leaders today, we will take action to keep that number below 135 megatonnes.

Edmonton is

healthy urban climate-resilient

This is Two
Million.

Our plan to cut down emissions includes adding millions of trees to Edmonton’s already stunning urban tree canopy.

We will get there together.

Because we’ll build it together.

Home for thousands of years.

Edmonton is located within Treaty 6 Territory and within the Métis homelands and Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4. We acknowledge this land as the traditional territories of many First Nations.
